IN THE BEGINNING . . .

Once upon a time there was a little boy who wanted a puppy.  Dad wasn't all that keen but agreed providing it was a small dog with short hair, and we both agreed it had to be a very gentle breed that was good with children.  With those ground rules in place we set off to find the newest member of our family, a basset hound puppy.

I'll never forget the night we brought him home from the breeder.  Our son was small at age 8, and he was struggling to carry in the giant-size 10-week-old puppy.  He was grinning ear to ear when his father said to him, "You said this was going to be a small dog."

"Yes, Daddy," he replied.  "He'll only be 14 inches at the withers and he's got short hair."  My husband looked at me with a comment something like, "I've been had!"  We named him Pythagoras because we knew he'd be quite bright.  We called him Gus.

And that was the beginning of a love affair with this wonderful breed that has lasted since 1978.  Since then we've been involved with conformation and tracking, and briefly with obedience and field trials.
